The F-14D fixed the problems that dogged the original Tomcat. General Electric F110 engines replaced the troublesome TF30s, adding thrust and removing the throttle handling restrictions, and the analogue AWG-9 gave way to the digital APG-71 with new displays and ejection seats. Deliveries began in 1991, and later in its career the type gained a targeting pod and a precision strike role that earned it the nickname Bombcat. On MCS the D model is the one people actually want to fly. It keeps the long reach and the variable-sweep wing but now has the acceleration to convert a radar advantage into a kill and to escape when a fight turns bad. It is still a big aircraft that a small fighter can out-turn at low speed, so the sensible plan is to stay fast and fight in the vertical.
