The J-31, also known as the FC-31 Gyrfalcon, first flew in October 2012. Shenyang developed it largely on its own initiative rather than to a state requirement, aiming at a medium weight stealth fighter that could be exported and that would sit below the larger J-20 in capability and cost. The first prototype used Russian RD-93 engines and was noticeably underpowered, with visible smoke and modest performance. On MCS this original airframe flies as a prototype should: the shaping and the internal bays are there, but the thrust is not. It accelerates and climbs less convincingly than the heavy stealth fighters, so it works best in ambush, using a small radar signature to open the fight and then disengaging before anyone forces it into a sustained turn. Recommended for pilots who like fighting from concealment rather than from the front.
