The HH-60 Pave Hawk is the combat search and rescue version of the Black Hawk, in service from 1982. Its job is going in to recover downed aircrew and casualties from places that are still contested, so it carries a rescue hoist on the starboard side, a retractable air refuelling probe on the nose for reaching distant crash sites, extra internal fuel, and machine guns in both cabin doors. Later aircraft added terrain following radar and better defensive systems. On MCS the Pave Hawk is the recovery helicopter. It gets to a downed pilot or a pinned squad, holds a hover under fire while the hoist runs, and has the door guns to make that hover survivable for a little longer. It is not an attack helicopter and it should not be flown as one. Recommended for teams that want someone whose job is bringing people back.
