The MiG-21 entered service in 1959 and more than eleven thousand were built, which makes it the most produced supersonic aircraft in history. The layout is simple and effective: a tailed delta wing, a nose intake with a movable shock cone for the radar, and an engine that gives it a strong climb rate for its size. It was cheap, easy to maintain and exported everywhere, and a number of air forces still operate upgraded examples. On MCS the MiG-21 is small, quick off the mark and almost invisible from the rear quarter. It climbs and accelerates well enough to surprise much newer aircraft in a first pass. What it does not have is fuel, radar range or sustained turn performance, so a fight that lasts more than one or two turns goes against it. Recommended for hit and run interception and for anyone who likes classic airframes.
