The Avenger is a Humvee with a gyro stabilised turret bolted onto the back, holding two pods of four Stinger missiles and a .50 calibre M3P machine gun between them. It entered service in 1989. The stabilisation is what makes it useful: it can acquire and launch while the vehicle is moving, so an air defence section can keep up with a convoy instead of stopping to set up. A forward looking infrared sight and laser rangefinder handle target identification. On MCS the Avenger is quick reaction air defence. It gets to a threatened area faster than any tracked system, forces aircraft to fly higher or go around, and the machine gun handles anything that comes at it on the ground. The vehicle itself is a soft skinned truck, so one burst of cannon fire ends it. Recommended for mobile teams that need cover from helicopters and low flying jets.
