The Marder entered Bundeswehr service in 1971 and was the first Western infantry fighting vehicle of its kind. The 1A5 upgrade, delivered from 2003, was driven by mine threats: the floor was reinforced, seats were hung from the roof and walls so blast does not travel through them into the crew, and internal stowage was rearranged to remove loose objects. Armament remained the 20 mm Rh 202 autocannon and a MILAN missile launcher. On MCS the Marder is the durable, unspectacular choice. The 20 mm is smaller than most rivals carry, so it takes longer to kill an armoured target, but the vehicle is well protected from below, mechanically dependable and stable enough to shoot accurately on rough ground. It does not have the reach of a TOW armed vehicle. Recommended for players supporting infantry directly and holding ground rather than raiding.
